Creative Uses for Dimensional Letters

In a world where brands compete for shrinking attention spans, dimensional letters are a versatile and creative way for companies to make a memorable impact on their audience. By making brand elements, quite literally, pop out at the viewer, companies can enhance brand recognition, increase visibility, relay information, and create a polished, sophisticated look. The key, of course, is customization. Depending on the intended use and budget, we can fabricate and install letters that are temporary or permanent, simple or high-end, incorporate LED lighting, and made from a variety of different materials.

The longevity and/or exposure to the weather are key factors in determining the best materials for your dimensional letters. Outdoor and weather-exposed signs require durable materials like plastics or metal. This type of lettering can be painted, printed directly to the surface, or vinyl graphics can be applied to create the desired look. A weather-protective coating should also be added to shield the ink or paint to increase longevity. Indoor applications in dry conditions allow lighter materials like paper and untreated wood to be used.

Dimensional letters are a great addition to a wide variety of spaces. Retail stores, restaurants and cafes, corporate offices, shopping centers, hotels, apartment buildings, medical facilities, convention and banquet halls, trade shows, and other large-scale events can all benefit from their inclusion. While our clients’ industries differ, our dimensional letter projects generally fall into five categories: retail displays and wayfinding signage, commercial interior décor, external brand signage, trade show booth displays, and event signage.

RETAIL DISPLAYS & WAYFINDING SIGNAGE

Complex retail displays feature an increasing variety of flat and 3D components. Often, this includes campaign-specific dimensional letters. Ranging in size, material, LED lighting integration, and intended usage and location — affixed to a wall, applied to a self-standing SEG, hung from the ceiling, attached to a base, enclosed in an acrylic display case, etc. — 3D letters can attract attention, communicate campaign messaging, and provide product information.

Our retail clients also frequently use 3D lettering to orient customers within their stores. Many companies, such as Columbia Sportswear, have multiple brand lines that each feature a different type of merchandise. Brand line names or slogans can be displayed using large elevated dimensional letters to help shoppers navigate to the camping gear without first having to wander through the skiing, fishing, and hiking sections. We’ve also created wayfinding signage to guide shoppers to the sections for Women’s, Men’s, and Kids' clothing, as well the fitting rooms and restrooms.

COMMERCIAL INTERIOR DÉCOR

There are a wide range of environmental spaces that fall into the commercial interior décor bucket. Corporate office lobbies often feature a 3D logo and conference rooms may boast the mission statement in raised letters. Dimensional lettering can also serve as wayfinding signage to direct employees and visitors through hallways to offices. Companies that entertain influencers may even install “Instagrammable” 3D wall art for visitor photo ops.

Permanent 3D signage can be used to label different rooms or areas of a multi-use building. The restaurant, fitness center, convenience store, and pool all located within the same hotel need clear signage. Residential buildings require permanent floor and apartment door numbers, as well as labels for the leasing office and laundry room. Athletic facilities may feature branded signs for the home team and motivational wall quotes in athlete-only fitness areas. Finally, medical buildings need professional signage to distinguish between specialty and patient waiting areas. We can also help you ensure that your signage is ADA compliant.

EXTERNAL BRAND SIGNAGE

If you have a brick-and-mortar commercial space, exterior brand signage can advertise your company and help your clientele and/or employees find you. Restaurants, corporate offices, hotels, apartment buildings, hospitals and other medical facilities, higher education buildings, athletic facilities, and retail stores all generally feature a large dimensional logo affixed to the side of their building. Some brands also choose to display a 3D mission statement or established date. Exterior brand signage that must be visible at night — e.g. restaurants, hotels, and hospitals — strongly benefit from lit signage. Dimensional letters can be back-lit, front-lit, halo-lit, or edge-lit.

TRADE SHOW BOOTH DISPLAYS

In a massive convention center hall with hundreds of trade show booths, an outside-the-box booth presentation can help your company stand out. When an attendee steps into your space, they should feel like they’re stepping into your brand. Your logo should be prominent, bold, and memorable. To achieve this, we recommend incorporating dimensional letters. Surprise visitors by hanging it from the ceiling or placing it somewhere at eye-level, a table-top display, for example. And if you really want impact, light it up!

EVENT SIGNAGE

Large-scale events need large TED talk-style letters! (In our opinion, at least. 😉) Whether you’re organizing a fundraiser, banquet, awards event, conference, or speaking engagement, large, bold dimensional letters can serve as the event’s visual centerpiece. Any photos your guests take will help them commemorate the experience while also reinforcing your brand messaging.
