CASE STUDY
The end of each calendar year brings the season of giving, and Portland Golf Club wanted to gift their Board of Directors with something unique and personalized this past December. In partnership with 2Hemispheres, we collaboratively came up with the idea to create and build a dimensionalized wooden map of their golf course.
To achieve a natural look akin to an outdoor course, we selected oak, walnut, and fir as our primary materials. Our engineers wanted the fairways, sand traps, and putting greens to be accurate in color and offset from the rough. To create the desired 3D effect, we routed out a portion of the walnut to create the depth of the sand traps and then printed the desired sand color on top. We then utilized raised printing to depict the fairways.
To achieve the custom engraving for each board member, our cutting department used the laser, focusing on maintaining the clean lines and definition of the text without burning the wood. We made sure to preserve the intricacy of the Portland Golf Club logo for each board member to rep with pride!
To further enhance the 3D effect, we offset the course from an additional piece of walnut. We built a custom frame to house each course and then engraved the board member’s name and Portland Golf Course logo into the wood. Despite using three different types of wood – each individual piece unique in color in grain – we were able to create one unified look for a cohesive unboxing experience by all recipients. With the addition of a hanging cleat and the necessary hardware, the personalized rustic wood-framed map became a statement decoration perfect for an office.
